Since I was a child, I have been passionate about gourmet food, and healthy living. But when it came to preparing food, I rarely went beyond making pasta or boiling an egg. More recently, I started experimenting with new ideas, and realized how much I liked to cook. Most of the time though, it was just simpler to order in, or pop over to my favorite eatery.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected each of us in some way, no matter what part of the world, or social class we belong to. The virus has left its mark in the shape of jobs lost, forsaken social norms, and disruption to our normal way of life.
A major casualty of this global catastrophe has been fine dining and gourmet food. As a result, the joy of sitting in a crowded restaurant, enjoying our favorite dishes, is now a distant dream. No doubt, this was an experience that cannot be entirely replaced. Yet, I see this as an opportunity to re-discover the passion of preparing your own meals in the comfort of your home.
Gourmet food after COVID-19
It was early 2020 when the pandemic reached my part of the world. Dining in became risky, and we completely switched to takeaway or ordering in. Over time, these options also became fewer and less desirable.
Thus, I decided to take up covid cooking and shifted my focus to preparing my favorite meals at home. The added benefits included healthier, more affordable meals, and much more options. A whole new world had opened up.
I can now proudly say that I no longer crave for the best steak joint in town, or the juiciest burger place. My kitchen beats, most eateries, both in terms of taste, as well as hygiene and quality of ingredients. It also helps satiate my desire for sustainable, eco-friendly living.
Freshly ground, home brewed coffee
One thing that I miss is the experience of sipping my favorite coffee at the local café. This is where I would often bump into old friends and business associates. It used to be a great opportunity to catch up on things, as well as make new connections.
That isn’t possible anymore, but I can at least brew my own coffee from freshly ground beans. For the social part, I make do with the many video conference calls I have throughout the day.
The taste of the final product alone was not what reignited my flame of DIY eating. I discovered a whole ecosystem around it. The various types of cookware, herb gardens, and food preservation techniques. And off course, doing all this from the perspective of an environmentalist.
With this website, my intention is to share this journey with all you readers.
I will be sharing recipes that I have gathered from my loved ones, and further refined to suit my palate. I will discuss the various food preparation techniques that I have picked up. The many ways of minimizing waste that I have discovered. Even the choice of cookware for each scenario.
It is my hope that the recipes and experiences that I share here will inspire others in these trying times. I would love to hear your feedback, and urge you to share your own formulas and learnings.
